Course Information
Lorna is offering a range of stained glass courses between April and October in 2025. She has been working with stained glass for 30 years creating windows, mirrors, hangings, jewellery and sculptural work. She has worked with a number of community groups and exhibits in a variety of galleries and annual exhibitions. She has recently completed a chapel window and has instigated a series of workshops for women who’ve experienced trauma. She is currently working on a large private commission of 30 square feet.
A One Day course includes all materials and tools required to design and complete a piece of stained glass (panel/hanging etc). Design templates are provided for those who would like to use one but if you choose to design your own she would highly recommend no more than 10 pieces in the design. She will happily provide advice on the day regarding complexity of the design and the compatibility with beginners skills. Lorna will begin by teaching you the basic skills required for cutting glass and explaining the strengths and limitations within glass designing. She can also advise the types of glass best suited to your design .
If you choose the shell hanging course she will also be providing suitable shells and sea glass to be included with stained glass showing the unique properties of these additions. There are two basic techniques for joining glass, Copper foiling and Leading. A one day course will explore one of these techniques. You will leave with a complete finished piece of stained glass work. She will walk you through the stages of designing, cutting glass, grinding, foiling or leading, soldering and polishing. She will also teach the different finishes and processes required for achieving different effects, silver, black and copper. (Copper is not available for lead)
The two day courses are designed to create a stained glass wreath allowing plenty time to learn to cut glass then cut out the necessary pieces to create the wreath. Cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering, adding a patina then polishing. Courses run from 10-5pm Lunch is not provided but the house and garden are available for students to have their packed lunch.
The local SPAR shop provides a range of sandwiches etc if required(5 minute walk). Tea and coffee will be provided.
Please wear old and warm clothes, bring any aprons you may want to use and ensure you have stout footwear as you will be working with glass. Please remember your Glasses if you wear them.
